The Jewel in the Crown of Ireland's road network

And so, today, 34 years after it was initially planned the M50 is completed. The final section connecting Ballinteer to beautiful Shankill has been opened by our wonderful (not to mention infallible) Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen. All of the city's trafffic problems have now been solved. Three cheers for Marty!

Death Penalty

(letter published in the Irish Times on 21 June 2005)

Madam

Kevin Myers, in response to a letter criticising his article on media coverage of the Middle East, states that he assumes that the writer, Raymond Deane, would have opposed the execution of Himmler, clearly suggesting that such a position would be a form of madness. As someone who is opposed to the use of Capital Punishment in all cases I can certainly state that I would be opposed to such an execution. If you believe that murder is morally wrong then it follows that state sanctioned murder is also morally wrong no matter what crime has been committed.

Mr Myers should also note that the people of this country voted to change our constitution to ensure that the death penalty could not be used under any circumstances and that this hardly fits with his assertion that "virtually without exception we all approve of capital punishment"

Yours etc.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, originally uploaded by ShankillFalls.

It's amazing the people you meet on the north side of Dublin... Cathal Brugha Street to be exact, 5 June 2005. For oldsters like me Tutu is a really iconic figure.....

Traffic Light Countdown

traffic light countdown, originally uploaded by ShankillFalls.

An alien force seems to have come to Dublin and broken all the (very useful) pedestrian light timers that tell you how long it will be before the next green man.
